Getting the Most Out of Your High-Pressure Mercury Lamps
There’s a reason high-pressure mercury lamps are still the go-to for printing and coating. They just work. Because they put out a broad spectrum of light, they hit the photoinitiators from all angles—meaning you get a crisp cure on the surface and a solid set deep down in the ink. Power, Speed, and the Danger Zone When you’re looking at performance, it’s all about the balance between wattage and stability. Sure, cranking up the wattage increases the UV intensity, which lets you run your line faster. But here’s the thing: it’s not just about raw power. We spend a lot of time obsessing over the mercury vapor pressure inside the quartz. That pressure changes how the UV light actually penetrates thick layers of ink. Just be careful. If you push the wattage too hard without speeding up your conveyor, you’re going to end up scorching your materials. And nobody wants to explain a batch of burnt substrates to the boss. The Heat Factor These lamps run hot. Really hot. To handle that, we use high-purity fused quartz so the glass doesn’t soak up the UV radiation—it lets the shortwave light pass straight through to your product. But because of that heat, your reflectors have to stay spotless. It sounds simple, but a thin layer of dust can kill your UV output by 20% or more. A quick wipe-down saves you a lot of headaches. Setting Them Up Right Most of our lamps are designed to be drop-in replacements. You just swap them into your existing array and you’re good to go. We’ve focused heavily on electrode stability so you aren’t replacing bulbs every few weeks. One quick tip: make sure your ballast matches the lamp’s impedance. If they aren’t in sync, you’ll get annoying flickering or, worse, a lamp that burns out way too early. Also, remember that these aren’t like LEDs. You can’t just flip a switch and start curing instantly. They need a bit of time to warm up and hit their full spectral stride. Factor that ramp-up time into your morning routine, or you’ll find a few uncured patches on your first few runs.
