What matters, technically
The blue you see isn’t just cosmetic—it’s the visible emission from mercury vapor being excited inside the lamp. In germicidal UV lamps, the main output sits at 254nm, where DNA and RNA absorption peaks. The glass envelope is doped to block 185nm, so the lamp runs ozone-free. Expect stable spectral output, measured irradiance at the target plane, and a rated life of 8,000–9,000 hours with a controlled end-of-life drop.

What to keep straight on the floor
Match the lamp to the fixture—base type, arc length, and reflector geometry have to line up. Make sure the power supply matches the lamp’s voltage and ignition requirements; mismatched drivers will shorten life and throw off the spectrum. Handle with clean gloves. Skin oils create hot spots and can crack the quartz. Double-check that safety interlocks and the wiring behind them meet the machine’s requirements. Plan for warm-up to reach stable irradiance, and schedule replacements around planned press downtime.
